| The Historic Port of Kyrenia: |
| Overlooking the entrance to the harbour is Kyrenia Castle. Dating back to the Byzantine age, the castles massive defenses surround a complex mixture of building styles built over the centuries, possibly on the site of a Roman fort. Subsequently enlarged and strengthened by the Lusignans and then the Venetians, the castle is now home to many historical artefacts and is the current resting-place of the world's oldest shipwreck. The castle overlooks the harbour and the crescent shaped promenade has been turned into a pedestrian zone, where delightful pavement cafes with Venetian façades welcome you with fresh local cuisine and a friendly atmosphere - a wonderful way to spend an evening. Kyrenia harbour is the place to book boat trips, paragliding and the many other activities that Northern Cyprus has to offer and it is about a 15 minute drive from the villa and well worth a visit. |
