The Palace and Amphitheatre at Salamis:: |
| The Ruins of Salamis are only a few miles North of Gazimagusa, where the remnants of the ruins of the antique city of Salamis still remains today abandoned to the encroaching sand. Salamis was built in the 11th century BC by Achaean and Anatolian settlers and it came to a bitter end when the last king of Salamis raised it to the ground. Salamis is a great site to visit if you are interested in the history of Cyprus and archaeology and it takes about an hour to reach from the villa. The most impressive remains are the theatre and the gymnasium shown below, and the remaining statues. Other parts of the site that are worth a look at are the palaestra which is a vast exercise ground with marble columns, the sudatorium or roman `sweat room' and the calderium. The excavations are scattered over a square mile of scrub land and it is advisable to wear decent foot wear and take plenty of sun protection and hats as it is really hot and exposed - if you are going in July or August go early! |
